Pharmacist says 'normal' feeling could be 'red flag' of thyroid imbalance

A pharmacist has shared insights on identifying when everyday fatigue becomes a cause for concern. Niamh McMillan, the pharmacy superintendent at Superdrug, cautions that ongoing tiredness might signify an urgent need for medical attention. In some cases, blood tests can reveal hidden issues such as nutrient deficiencies or thyroid problems.

Niamh notes, “It’s typical to feel slightly more fatigued during winter months.” However, she emphasizes that if fatigue is unrelenting and starts to interfere with focus, mood, or daily activities, it could signal an internal issue needing attention.

Tiredness and hidden deficiencies

“Low energy levels are often connected to deficiencies in key nutrients like iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D,” Niamh mentioned. These nutrients are essential for energy creation, oxygen transport, and maintaining overall health.

She highlighted that these deficiencies are more prevalent in winter due to dietary changes and reduced sunlight exposure.

Symptoms of these deficiencies can develop slowly, causing individuals to feel chronically tired without realizing there is an underlying problem. Blood tests can help look beyond the symptoms and identify what the body is lacking.

When fatigue could signal a thyroid issue

In other cases, ongoing fatigue might point to a thyroid imbalance. “The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and energy levels. When it is underactive, symptoms might include persistent fatigue, mental fog, weight fluctuations, and increased sensitivity to cold,” Niamh elaborated.

“These symptoms are often mistaken for stress or seasonal burnout, which means thyroid issues can go undetected for longer than they should.

“Blood testing is one of the most effective ways to identify whether the thyroid is functioning properly and whether further medical advice is needed.”

Listening to the signs – from the inside out

Niamh continued: “For anyone struggling with unexplained tiredness, Superdrug Online Doctor offers a Thyroid Screen Blood Test for £69 that can identify how well your thyroid is functioning.

“The process is discreet, convenient and provides clear results that help people take the next step – whether that’s lifestyle changes, supplements or speaking to a healthcare professional. For those looking to support their energy levels, Superdrug’s own-brand vitamins and supplements offer an affordable option for all purses.”
