Brits urged to eat 1 fruit before bed - ‘helps you sleep’

An expert has disclosed that a particular fruit can aid in falling asleep. For many, catching some Z’s can be quite challenging. Several factors contribute to this difficulty, such as excessive heat or anxiety related to sleep. To enhance your sleep, there is a widely available fruit that a nutrition expert suggests consuming before bed. What you eat pre-sleep is crucial, as ingredients like sugar, vitamins, and caffeine can influence your sleep quality.

Nutritionist Brenda Madole from MyOrThrive has identified foods that contain naturally occurring melatonin, a hormone beneficial for sleep. Melatonin, which is naturally present in our bodies, increases during the night as we sleep and decreases in the daytime as we wake. Synthetic melatonin is often used briefly to aid those with insomnia. Interestingly, there is a fruit naturally containing melatonin that can assist in improving sleep.

Brenda shared that grapes are excellent fruits to consume before sleeping. They are a direct source of the sleep-regulating hormone that manages your circadian rhythm.

She stated: “Your evening dietary choices significantly affect your sleep quality. Some foods naturally encompass compounds that encourage melatonin and serotonin production—the hormones responsible for managing your sleep-wake cycle. Selecting an appropriate evening snack could facilitate quicker sleep onset and more restful slumber.”

Many social media users are catching onto this sleep tip, with some commending its effectiveness. One Reddit participant mentioned: “I enjoy munching on grapes and was puzzled by the sleepiness that followed. My sleep specialist explained last week that they’re perfect for snacking about 20 minutes prior to bed.”

Another shared: “My grandma told me grapes before bed helped her fall asleep.”

Apart from grapes, other foods can also aid sleep at night. Brenda highlighted that kiwis could elevate serotonin levels, promoting sleep. Additionally, bananas are recommended due to their magnesium content, which aids in muscle relaxation.

She added: “The key is to keep evening snacks light. Overeating or having heavy, fatty foods before bed can actually disrupt your sleep. A handful of almonds, a small bowl of oats, or a kiwi are ideal choices if you’re looking for a natural sleep aid.”
