The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is advising individuals experiencing specific symptoms to “stay home for 48 hours” due to the rapid spread of a troublesome virus.
Norovirus, known for its high contagiousness, poses a significant risk, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones if it infiltrates your household.
According to the NHS, norovirus can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected individual, by touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus, and then touching your mouth.
Additionally, the virus can be present in food that has been prepared or handled by someone who is ill. It’s important to note that unlike some other germs, norovirus is not eliminated by alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
In a recent announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, the UKHSA stated: “Norovirus spreads easily, so if you catch it, you should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.”
The agency also recommends: “Regular hand washing with soap and warm water can help prevent catching the virus and spreading it if you fall ill.”
“If you catch norovirus don’t go to work or school for 48 hours after symptoms stop, as you can still pass it on during this time. Do not visit loved ones in hospital or care homes in this time to avoid causing outbreaks.”
Norovirus can typically be managed at home by ensuring the patient gets plenty rest and stays hydrated to prevent dehydration.
People usually start to recover within two to three days. However, if your vomit begins to resemble ground coffee, contains blood, or takes on a green or yellow-green hue, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
