A woman who works at a vet clinic has shared the top dog breeds she recommends getting if you are a first-time owner. Welcoming a pet into your home can be amazing. However, dogs are a big responsibility, so finding the right breed that fits into your home well,  suits your lifestyle and won’t cause you too much chaos is essential.

Many breeds have amazing temperaments and are great with children, while some are fantastic guard dogs. Others tend to love snoozing and cuddles on the sofa. Sage Overson has been sharing her top tips online, raking in millions of reactions. The vet clinic worker previously spoke abroad breeds she would not get, and recently shared a list of dogs she would own.

She noted: “These are breeds I’ve been loving since working with thme. Not professional recommendations. Even a perfect dog isn’t a perfect fit for everyone and every dog is different. Please do your research.”

Australian Shepherd

Sage shared a snap of her “little baby angel princess” laying on a sofa oh-so peacefully. She noted the Aussie dogs are “nuts” but this makes them a fun pet. She also insists that they are quick learners and “all so unique.”

This breed is medium-sized are are known for their energy, intelligence and ability to herd. These dogs like to run a lot and play ball games.

Great Pyrenees

These mountain dogs are large, fluffy and a powerful breed. They are known for their strong instincts, but also their calm and gentle temperament. These obedient dogs are super loyal and devoted to their families, which means they can also be stubborn.

Sage said these dogs are her “favourite clients”. She said the puppies “could be mistaken for a polar bear”, and you could trust this breed with a newborn baby.

Poodle

While a lot of people love miniature and toy poodles, Sage insists that the standard poodle will make a great pet. She described the breed as “angel on earth”, noting the dogs “wouldn’t hurt a fly”. They aim to please and are pretty easy going.

These dogs are affectionate and playful. They love being social and part of family activities.

Bull Terrier

This breed is often noted on lists of dangerous dog breeds, as many people see them as aggressive with a tendency to bite. However, with the correct training they can be a great pet and they are always devoted to their owner.

Sage said: “Hear me out! So emotionally intelligent and in tune. A misunderstood breed. I think they’re so cute.”

Basset Hound

American Kennel Club states: “The Basset Hound is a perennial favourite of dog lovers all over the world. This low-slung and low-key hound can be sometimes stubborn, but is always charming.”

This breed is said to have incredible scent, and they are loyal. While it is not the fastest dog in the world, they can walk for a long time. But, be aware that they have a loud, ringing bark.

Sage said: “I’ll deal with the ear infections and bad skin, they’re so precious.”

Golden Retriever

Is there anyone who doesn’t like a golden retriever? This breed, known for its striking golden coat, is popular with families thanks to its gentle and affectionate nature. These dogs also love walking and playing.

Sage said of the breed: “The OG family dog, for good reason, before the doodle. Perfect for active families, happy dogs.”

Shih Tzu

Sage commented: “Never thought I’d be into these things but they’re so unintentionally funny and chill. Pretty sure they live forever.”

These cuties can be good family dogs – they are known for being affectionate and forming strong bonds with their families. They can be a bit stubborn and lack patience, but training can help. Their size makes them easy to manage, too.

Rottweiler

These dogs are large and are great guard dogs. They are protective, form strong bonds with their families, and are affectionate.

However, due to their size and protectiveness, they need a lot of training and experienced owners. Sage said: “Rottweiler – literally bred to watch little kids. All about early socialisation and they’ll be the most loyal companions.” Although she noted they drool a lot.

Sage also says she likes labradors, pitbulls and dobermans. She also likes how “awkward” whippets are and has “only heard good things” about the breed.
