Beer gardens could make common health condition 'worse' amid Met Office 'red alert'

Residents across the UK have been cautioned this week as meteorologists issue urgent red warnings for “very high” pollen levels throughout parts of the country. The UK pollen season, which spans from March to September, is in full swing, with plants, grasses, and trees releasing pollen that can significantly impact those with seasonal allergies.

As temperatures are predicted to soar, surpassing even those of traditional warm-weather cities like Cairo and Athens, many may be tempted to enjoy the outdoors with a drink in hand. However, during the peak of pollen season, this seemingly pleasant activity could spell trouble for millions. Heading to beer gardens could exacerbate hay fever symptoms considerably.

The Met Office highlights on its website that alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and spirits contain histamine, a chemical known to trigger allergy symptoms in the body. Consequently, indulging in these popular drinks may lead to a notable increase in discomfort for hay fever sufferers.

According to Allergy UK, alcohol not only contains histamine but also suppresses the immune system, which hampers its ability to manage allergic reactions. Experts warn that this suppression can make allergy symptoms more pronounced and harder to handle.

While most alcoholic drinks are high in histamine, red wine is particularly notorious for its elevated levels, as reported by the Mirror. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dehydration, further worsening hay fever symptoms.

In guidance issued by Kleenex UK, several strategies are suggested to reduce the impact of allergies. A spokesperson advised, “On days with high pollen counts, opting for low-histamine clear spirits like gin and vodka might be wise. Alternatively, consider enjoying one of the many refreshing alcohol-free drinks or summery soft drink options available.”

The well-known tissue brand also suggested that people should cut back on their sugar consumption during peak pollen season. Sugar is said to be inflammatory, and consuming excessive amounts of fizzy drinks and sweets could “severely worsen allergy symptoms”.

The brand spokesperson added: “White sugar, agave and corn syrup are all processed like sugar in your body. When seasonal allergies are reaching their peak, take a break from all sugars and sweeteners to avoid exacerbating your hay fever symptoms.”

Chocolate is also “brimming with histamines” and can hinder your body’s ability to eliminate histamine, leading to inflammation and further complications. Despite their popularity amongst health-conscious individuals, fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha harbour high levels of histamine.

Beyond medication and measures to reduce pollen exposure, people can naturally support their bodies in combating inflammation by consuming pineapple and a variety of berries, as well as sipping herbal teas such as ginger, liquorice root, turmeric, and green tea.

To keep health risks from alcohol low, the NHS advises that people should not drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. For help and support if you believe you have a problem with alcohol, click here.
