Over-60s use savings to fund private healthcare as NHS waiting list reaches over 860,000

Recent findings have underscored the increasing financial strain on older UK residents seeking medical care, with a 2025 YouGov study indicating that 15% of individuals over 65 turned to private healthcare in the previous year. Notably, 71% of these seniors funded their care using disposable income or savings.

This shift toward ‘self-funding’ for consultations, diagnostics, and elective surgeries is quietly fueling the UK’s £1.6 billion self-pay market. As older adults, who typically require more medical interventions, reconsider their strategies for late-life healthcare, the NHS faces a significant backlog. The Trauma & Orthopedic department currently boasts the most extensive waiting list, with over 860,000 patients queued and an average wait time of 15.2 weeks for procedures.

To address the predicament faced by this generation caught in healthcare limbo, a new offering has emerged. Lateral, a company dedicated to products for those over 60, has introduced the Lateral Health Plan to meet the growing demand for quicker access and enhanced choice.

Laura Ashforth, the Co-founder and CEO of Lateral, explained, “We established Lateral to empower individuals over 60 to handle their health and finances with more confidence and simplicity.”

The plan is designed as a more cost-effective alternative to traditional comprehensive private medical insurance, focusing on common private healthcare needs. By complementing NHS services instead of replacing them, Lateral claims it can maintain more affordable pricing, with the plan costing £150 monthly for a qualified 67-year-old.

A key component of the policy is a nurse-led navigation service. Delivered by skilled case-management nurses, this service aids members in exploring treatment options and navigating both NHS and private avenues, helping those over 60 make well-informed decisions. Additionally, it includes preventative care such as an annual health check.

Laura Ashforth added: “The Lateral Health Plan is designed for people who have no intention of stopping and are looking for clarity, support and choice when it comes to their healthcare – alongside the NHS, not instead of it.”

Dr Samantha Field, Chief Medical Officer at Lateral, added: “Prevention plays an important role as people age.

“The Lateral Health Plan is designed to help people take a more proactive approach to their health, with access to services such as an annual health check and support from nutrition and physiotherapy services, to help members better understand their options over time.”
