Wimbledon tennis player Novak Djokovic has revealed what he eats in a day, and it has been described as ‘insanely healthy’. In a previous interview with American journalist Graham Bensinger, the sports icon shared what he drinks as soon as he wakes up and the type of food he makes sure he eats.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion played Alexandre Muller in his most recent match this week and beat him in four sets. Djokovic won 10 of the final 12 games, ultimately winning 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-2 after a medical timeout.

A clip from the interview, which you can watch below, is available on YouTube. At the start of the clip, Bensinger asks: “What do you eat in an average day?” The Serbian tennis star replied: “I start with warm water and lemon, so I can help my body detoxify.”

Sipping on warm lemon water, especially first thing in the morning, is often seen as a good habit. It can assist with hydration, digestion, and might even offer some vitamin C along with other helpful compounds.

Having any drink in the morning, like warm lemon water, helps to replenish your body after a night of sleep. The citric acid found in lemons can kickstart the production of bile and digestive juices, which may help with digestion and encourage regular bowel movements. Lemons provide vitamin C, an antioxidant that boosts the immune system and helps shield cells from damage.

Next, the tennis player says he would have “celery juice on an empty stomach”. Drinking celery juice first thing in the morning, especially on an empty stomach, is often suggested for its possible benefits.

Celery juice is thought to improve nutrient absorption and prepare the digestive system for the day. It may help kickstart the production of digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid, which can set the stomach up for better digestion of other foods later on.

Some fans of this practice believe that having celery juice on an empty stomach can aid in flushing out toxins and boosting liver health. Plus, celery juice is packed with water, which helps with hydration, and many people say it gives them a nice energy lift, even without any caffeine.

Djokovic then says he takes a break from eating or drinking before eventually having a smoothie, which he describes as “a green smoothie with different algae.” Green smoothies made with various algae, such as spirulina and chlorella, can be a great addition to your diet, providing a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants.

These algae are often labelled as “superfoods” and offer a simple way to enhance your intake of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Algae are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

For instance, spirulina boasts a high protein-to-calorie ratio. Algae have compounds that help shield your body from damage caused by free radicals. Certain algae, like chlorella, can function as probiotics and support a healthy gut.

For the first part of the day, Djokovic admits he “eats a lot of fruits and salads”. Explaining the reason why, he told viewers: “I don’t like to eat any food that would require much energy for digestion, especially in the first part of the da,y because that’s when I need the most energy for my training.”

To help “keep things quite light”, the Wimbledon champion has “pseudo-grains like quinoa, millet and wild rice”. He also includes sweet potato and normal potato in his diet, whether that is “steamed or boiled”.
