Smitten Nancy Pelosi revealed as 'fangirl' as she places early 2028 bet on Gavin Newsom

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may be planning her departure from Congress early next year, but she already has her sights set on a new political endeavor.

Her focus is shifting to the anticipated 2028 presidential campaign of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Pelosi has been actively championing Newsom among Democrats, both in private discussions and public statements. Last week, she told Politico that he would “make a great president,” according to a report by Axios on Monday.

“She’s a Gavin fangirl and she doesn’t crush on many people,” a former Pelosi aide revealed to Axios. “I will say this: She’s hardly ever wrong. When she says she sees something, it’s a real thing.”

Pelosi has long been a mentor to Newsom, with their relationship deeply rooted in their shared San Francisco origins and family connections. At one point, their families were linked by marriage, with Pelosi’s brother-in-law married to Newsom’s aunt.

Pelosi has been a mentor figure to Newsom for decades.

They’re both from San Francisco, and their family members were at one point married – Pelosi’s brother-in-law to Newsom’s aunt.

Newsom has worked his way up from a local San Francisco government gig, to the city’s mayor, to lieutenant governor, and onto governor, where he’s term-limited and won’t be running again.

He’s already said he’s interested in seeking the presidency.

In recent months, he’s been setting the table for that.

He has a new book coming out next week. He’s been attending international summits – first the World Economic Forum in Davos and now the Munich Security Conference to get his foreign policy feet wet. And he’s heightened his national profile by mocking President Donald Trump on social media.

Pelosi, for her part, has been helping Newsom get good press.

‘From the standpoint of leadership, vision, and values, knowledge of the issues, strategic thinking about how to get things done … he’s masterful,’ Pelosi told the New Yorker of Newsom.

Axios reported that Pelosi aides were surprised by how ‘effusive’ the praise was.

Pelosi also gushed about Newsom to Vogue.

‘I’ve seen him grow politically, I’ve also seen him have this beautiful family, and for all of us who love him, seeing him evolve has been wonderful to behold,’ she told the elite fashion magazine.

She also pushed back on the idea that Newsom lived nothing but a charmed life, as the son of a Superior Court judge with strong ties to the Getty family.

Newsom’s parents divorced when he was a child and he has recalled living with his mother while she struggled financially.

‘Everybody thinks of Gavin and a silver spoon. But that isn’t right,’ Pelosi told the Atlantic for a January profile. ‘He was a very hard worker in everything that he did, whether it was personally, professionally, and then civically.’

The 85-year-old Pelosi is set to retire from Congress in January 2027 – 20 years after she made history by becoming the first female House speaker.

That unshackling from congressional leadership means she can more easily endorse in the Democratic primary early.

With her comes a vast donor network and one of the most potent endorsements in the Democratic Party.

However, she’s not always made the right call on her endorsement timing.

The Daily Mail first reported in October how her quick endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in July 2024, a day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, angered another party leader: former President Barack Obama.

In his book Retribution, ABC News’s Jonathan Karl cemented that Obama hadn’t wanted a quick coronation of Harris, but rather a ‘process’ to pick who would replace Biden on the Democratic ticket.

‘The Obamas were not happy,’ a Pelosi confidant told Karl. ‘This person summed up Obama’s message to Pelosi as, essentially, “What the f*** did you just do?”‘

Harris would go on to lose all seven swing states to President Donald Trump.

Spokespeople for Pelosi and Newsom did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s requests for comment.
