Jose Mourinho could be set for a ban after his controversial comments about referee Matteo Marcenaro prior to Roma’s 2-1 at Sassuolo last weekend, according to reports.

Mourinho’s men came from behind to beat their 10-man hosts, but the game was overshadowed by his comments before a ball was even kicked.

Ahead of last Sunday’s clash, Mourinho questioned Marcenaro’s emotional state, admitting he was ‘worried’ about having the official in charge of his side’s match.

‘We had this official three times and I don’t think he has the emotional stability to work at this level.’

The FIGC, Italy’s football federation, opened an investigation into Mourinho’s remarks later that day, and after concluding this on Monday, the Portuguese manager was called in for a meeting with prosecutor Giuseppe Chine on Friday to explain his comments, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.

According to the report, Mourinho co-operated with the FIGC during their 90-minute meeting, but could still be handed a suspension of up to 10 days as part of a plea bargain.

Should this be the case, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss would likely miss one league match, with Roma due to host Fiorentina on Sunday night.

The Italian giants are also in action against Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday before travelling to Bologna next Sunday.
