SAVANNAH, Ga. () — It’s the fifth week of Friday Night Blitz! Here’s a rundown of what happened under the Friday night lights.

In Week 5 of the high school football season, two teams achieved their first victories in more than a year. Islands ended a 37-game losing streak by defeating Groves, 31-18. This marks Islands’ first win since Oct. 9, 2021, when they last played Groves and triumphed 41-2.

This loss for Groves was particularly painful as it coincided with the opening of their new stadium. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Aug. 28. The Rebels have now faced defeat in 10 consecutive games, with their most recent victory over Islands in 2024 with a score of 25-22.

Additionally, South Effingham achieved a win after more than a year. The Mustangs secured a victory against Lakeside-Evans with a score of 20-14 at home. Before this, their last triumph occurred on Oct. 27 against Grovetown, winning 40-14 at home.
