ORLANDO, Fla. – On Friday evening, a crash involving five vehicles on Florida’s Turnpike in Orlando resulted in both a trooper and a driver being hospitalized, reported the Florida Highway Patrol.
In a release, investigators said the crash happened around 5:26 p.m. in the northbound lanes near State Road 417.
At the time, a semitruck with a trailer was headed south on the highway, but while changing lanes, it sideswiped another car, the release shows.
The investigation described a domino effect where a vehicle behind the initial crash swerved, hit another car, and ended up crossing the highway. It subsequently overturned and landed on the roof of a stationary FHP patrol car.
“When the incidents took place, our trooper was standing outside his vehicle,” according to the statement. “He quickly moved away, fell briefly, and was later taken to the hospital with minor injuries.”
The car that overturned continued its path, eventually hitting a concrete barrier and sliding down an embankment, as stated by the FHP. The driver involved was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Furthermore, the collision with the patrol car pushed it into the lanes of traffic, which led to it colliding with a fifth vehicle, the report adds.
The remaining drivers were uninjured and remained at the scene, troopers said.
No additional information has been provided at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
