BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) A man working across the street from the Boulder County Historic Courthouse jumped into action when he learned of an attack across the street, pouring water with help from others on victims who were set on fire.

Chad Henderson was working at Pizza Colore just feet away from the scene when he heard people screaming “fire.” He didn’t think twice about filling up pitchers of water, running back and forth from his restaurant to the courthouse to help an elderly woman who was clearly in distress.

There was a somber silence in the air on Pearl Street Mall following Sunday’s attack in Boulder, Colorado.

“I see it every Sunday when I come by,” said Henderson. “Every Sunday, I’ve been expecting something to happen.”

Henderson happened to be working his afternoon shift when he heard the commotion.

“I was behind the counter. I heard people saying it was a fire,” he said. “So, I hopped over them, saying ‘excuse me, please, get out of my way.’”

When he made it outside to the courthouse, he saw billowing smoke.

“I ran back into my restaurant and I started filling a pitcher with water,” said Henderson. “Ran back towards where everything was happening at the courthouse over here, and I learned it was for a person who had been set on fire.”

He was shocked, especially seeing the victim. He said she appeared to be a woman in her 80s.

“She was covered in the tarp they protest in. From her clavicle down, I could see her face and shoulders, her arms were a little bloody,” said Henderson.

Revisiting the same spot more than 24 hours after the terrifying attacks, he let it all sink in.

“I won’t wake up tomorrow and be the same I was yesterday by any means,” said Henderson, “I will be OK, I was not physically injured from the attack, and I did not fully witness the attack itself. I helped the people who did. I will be OK. I hope they will be, too. I know it will be a longer road for them.”

Henderson said it was heartbreaking to find out an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor was among the 12 victims. He said he has met her and traveled to Israel with her son.

He said he doesn’t call himself a hero for helping out he did what he felt anybody would do.
