CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – In 2024, Ashlyn Philpot became the first Illini freshman middle to post a double-double in a match since 2015.
Philpot notched 11 kills and 10 blocks against Illinois State early in her first season of college volleyball.
The native of Greenville, N.C. led the squad with an impressive 126 blocks in 2024. As she prepares for her second season with the Illini, head coach Chris Tamas anticipates a similar performance.
“She had an incredible season, earning a spot on the all-freshman team, and we’re pushing her to improve her blocking skills,” Tamas remarked. “I believe that’s one of the biggest challenges for a freshman entering the Big Ten as a middle blocker. We’ve set that challenge for her in the spring, and she’s excelling. I expect her blocking to improve and her offensive achievements to continue.”
Philpot also ranked fourth on the team with 215 kills last year. With Raina Terry (504 kills in 2024) having graduated and Laynie Smith (244) entering the transfer portal, Philpot may be tasked with more spiking opportunities in her sophomore year.
Illinois volleyball opens its 2025 campaign on Friday, Aug. 29 with a neutral site contest against South Dakota State in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
