Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Antonio Montez Wilson, 43, of Alabama, was arrested yesterday for allegedly trying to break into a home near Newberry Road.
The responding Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy reported that the victim said her daughter had seen a man trying to break in through a window in the back yard of her house, which is on NW 55th Street near Newberry Road.
The victim reported that she heard noises on the side of the house and then in the fenced back yard; the deputy noted that the gate was partially open when he arrived. The victim said her daughter, who was on the other side of the house, saw a man trying to lift one slat in the jalousie window with his hands. She said that after she saw the man, he ran back around the house and out through the gate; she said he was wearing a green camouflage jacket and possibly gray pants.
The deputy noted that the bottom slat of the window was stuck on the slat above, leaving a gap that the man used to try to pull it open.
Deputies located and detained Wilson in the 6100 block of West Newberry Road because he was wearing faded jeans and a green camouflage jacket.
A search of the back yard of the home reportedly produced a smartphone that did not belong to the occupants of the house; the phone number was linked to an Alabama number in law enforcement databases, and Wilson reportedly has an Alabama driver’s license.
The victim and her daughter were transported to the location where Wilson was detained, and the victim’s daughter reportedly identified Wilson as the man she had seen trying to break into the house.
Wilson has been charged with attempted burglary of an occupied residence. He has no local criminal history, and his listed address is in Birmingham, Alabama. Judge Craig DeThomasis set bail at $2,500.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
