The Hillsborough County Department of Public Works organized an open house at Apollo Beach Elementary School on Tuesday evening to gather community feedback regarding proposed modifications to Apollo Beach Blvd.

Officials reported that nearly 100 crashes have taken place on the road since 2019. With the area’s growing population, an assessment is in progress to address traffic and safety issues.

“We are here to engage with residents and identify the most effective solutions to support the growth of the community,” stated Bob Campbell, the Transportation Manager for the Apollo Beach area.

Residents had the opportunity to meet with County transportation officials and discuss what they would like to see improved for the roadway.

Post-it notes were placed along the “problem areas” of the street, and statistics were provided by Public Works.

“We need to find a way to compromise … there’s been too many accidents and traffic,” said Charma Owens, of Apollo Beach.

Suggestions for improvements include transforming one lane in each direction into a shared lane for golf carts and bicycles, expanding sidewalks, adding traffic signals, and improving road signage.

“I don’t think the golf cart issue is something anyone here is for,” said Jean MacDonald, of Apollo Beach.

The County informed 8 On Your Side that these suggestions will be reviewed and a detailed study will be conducted to identify the best possible changes for the road. After the study is completed, another public meeting will be held before discussions about funding proceed with the County Commission.
