Florida families save big in August back-to-school tax holiday

Almost time for the end of summer in Tallahassee, Fla. (WFLA) — As the weekend arrives, Floridians can look forward to significant savings on essentials like backpacks, computers, and shoes, gearing up for the return to school.

This year’s back-to-school sales tax holiday has a twist: it’s now guaranteed, every August.

“We’ve made a clear statement that this initiative is both a priority and essential enough to establish permanently,” expressed House Speaker Danny Perez (R-Miami).

Now, every August, Florida families and teachers can take advantage of a recurring back-to-school sales tax holiday.

“Starting August 1st, going all the way to the end of August, Floridians can save money on important school supplies,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

During this tax-free period, you can purchase clothing and shoes priced at $100 or below, school materials such as notebooks, pens, and binders for less than $50, educational tools like interactive workbooks for no more than $30, and tech products like computers and headphones, capped at $1,500.

“The retailers of the state can prepare for it and make sure they have all their ducks in a row and second of all, what we said to Florida families, especially those with school-aged kids, is when it comes time to go to school next year, we hear you, we see you, and we’re investing in that opportunity for you,” Senate President Ben Albritton (R-Wauchula) said.

Floridians won’t just be saving on heading back to school. This year, state lawmakers passed a number of sales tax holidays in the state budget. There’s a permanent disaster preparedness tax break and a 2nd amendment holiday to look forward to in the fall.

“When you think about the fact that it’s not just two weeks anymore, but it’s the entire month, that is huge for parents who are constantly busy with their day-to-day job. Now they have the flexibility to have an additional two weeks to get the tools that their children need,” Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas said.
