NAPLES, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida police department found an unusual suspect “bearly” awake in an unfinished lobby on Friday.

Naples Police Department officers were dispatched to Gulf Shore Boulevard North when a black bear was discovered napping in the lobby of a condominium currently under construction.

“He took a swim in the Gulf earlier and obviously tired himself out!” the police department posted on Facebook.

The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission informed NBC affiliate WBBH that their team safely apprehended the 300-pound bear with the use of chemical immobilization drugs.

Resident Laurie Krakora told the news station that she had just come back from an exercise class when she discovered she couldn’t access her building.

“They said, you can’t. It’s locked down. There’s a bear inside the building. So, of course, I thought they were joking. And, they said no … he wandered in from the beach. He was walking down the beach, and — we’re doing construction, so a door was open,” Krakora said.

Staff members from a condo next door said they captured video of the bear swimming in the Gulf, then charging toward a person on the beach before heading into the building.

No one was hurt.
