Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was escorted off the field with an injury to his left toe during the first half of their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The team later confirmed he would not return for the remainder of the game.

In the second quarter, Burrow was attempting a pass when Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead tackled him. He attempted to get up but remained on the field, awaiting medical assistance.

Trainers appeared to be examining his left ankle before he was taken off the field.

Once off the field, Burrow was observed limping in the tunnel of the stadium with no shoe on his left foot.

At 28 years old, Burrow was the top pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Throughout his career, he’s faced various injuries, including the loss of the last six games in his rookie year due to a torn ACL. He also missed seven games in 2023 because of a ligament tear in his wrist.

The Bengals have had difficulties providing adequate protection for Burrow since he joined the league. Last season, he suffered 48 sacks, and the Bengals were rated last in ESPN’s pass block win rate metric.

In spite of these protection issues, Burrow managed to pass for 4,918 yards and score 43 touchdowns in 2024, topping the NFL in both categories. Additionally, he led Cincinnati to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, joining Patrick Mahomes as the only other AFC quarterback to reach the Super Bowl since 2019.

Cincinnati entered Week 2 with a 1-0 record after a win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.
