BLUFFTON, S.C. () — Bluffton’s mayor is speaking out about a lawsuit filed against his town by one of its own council people.

Bridgette Frazier has filed a lawsuit against the town, the Bluffton Police Department, and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, seeking punitive damages and reimbursement for medical expenses following her arrest in March 2024 for driving without a license.

It turned out her license was not suspended. The DMC did apologize for the mistake.

Frazier said the incident was negligent and caused emotional and financial harm.

Bluffton Mayor Larry Toomer says he does not support the suit or her demands.

On social media, Toomer clarified that he is sharing his personal views, not those of the town, stating in part, “No one is above the law. Every individual, whether elected or not, deserves equal treatment. Therefore, I do not believe it is in the town’s best interest to settle this lawsuit just because she is a member of the council.”

Frazier already sent a $2 million demand letter to the town last summer.

Lawyers for the Town of Bluffton have not responded to the suit.
