BMW recalls over 145K vehicles over fire risk from overheated starters

(The Hill) – Over 145,000 BMW vehicles have been recalled due to a fire hazard caused by overheated starters, as announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall was announced on Sept. 25 and it involved 145,102 vehicles, impacting X5, X6, X7, 2020 340I, 840I and 740 LI models.

NHTSA reported that the engine starter might sometimes fail to start the car properly, which could result in overheating of the engine starter in that area.

“If overheating occurs in the engine starter, the nearby engine acoustic protection material could catch fire if it’s contaminated,” stated NHTSA. “Although uncommon, this might result in a thermal incident while driving or soon after parking, particularly if the vehicle had a starting event just prior to being parked.”

The solution involves replacing the engine starter with a newly designed version. Owners will receive mail notifications with instructions to visit an authorized BMW dealership to have the issue addressed.

Earlier this week, BMW issued a recall of nearly 200,000 vehicles due to a possible fire risk over engine corrosion.
