BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – In a county struggling to pay firefighters a better starting wage than just $15/hour, millions to help find solutions could suddenly become available.
It doesn’t come without controversy, though.
A Brevard County commissioner who campaigned on helping firefighters is against the move because it directly affects her district.
In 2011, the county and the city of Titusville created the North Brevard Economic Development Zone to help bring back growth after the end of the space shuttle program.
After nearly 15 years, the space industry has roared back in a huge way.
So now, at this week’s county commission meeting, Commissioner Kim Adkinson proposed defunding NBEDZ and giving that $3 million a year to Brevard County Fire Rescue.“The project did its job in that crisis,” Adkinson said. “Right now, we are having another crisis, and I am suggesting that we move money from one crisis to another.”
Commissioner Katie Delaney, who rallied with firefighters herself during a protest this year, suggested the other commissioners pay their fair share.
“Why is district 1 baring the brunt of this issue, and where was your input fellow commissioners in funding our fire department?” Delaney asked.
The commission voted 3-2 to draft its intent to stop all payments to NBEDZ and collect any funds that were not used
A final vote will take place at a future meeting.
The president of the firefighter’s union, Mike Bramson, told News 6 reporter James Sparvero he didn’t wish to publicly comment before a final vote takes place.
Friday, Brevard County gave an update on its stalled contract negotiations with firefighters.
The county said in May it expects a magistrate to decide on a middle ground for both sides.
That way, the county and firefighters can move forward for at least the next year with a new contract.
