BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A man was arrested after allegedly slicing an officer’s hand with a knife and then running from the scene on Wednesday.

The Bristol, Virginia Police Department (BVPD) reported that an officer was on patrol in the downtown area around 10 a.m. during which time he noticed Matthew Dwayne Moore, age 36, walking near Commonwealth Avenue.

A BVPD news release states the officer knew Moore had active warrants from Bristol, Virginia and that he had fled from officers days before.

As stated in the release, “Upon making contact and trying to arrest Moore, the individual resisted, brandished a knife, and injured the officer’s hand before escaping on foot.”

Additional officers quickly responded and located Moore just across the state line, capturing him near the crossroads of Volunteer Parkway and Shelby Street in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Bristol, Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) apprehended Moore and charged him as a fugitive from justice. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remained in custody in Tennessee pending the extradition process.

During the incident, the officer suffered cuts to three of his fingers. The Bristol, Tennessee Fire Department treated the officer’s wounds at the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he received further care and was subsequently discharged.

Moore faces charges from the BVPD for assault and battery against a law enforcement officer, as well as obstruction of justice. His previous warrants included charges for obstruction of justice, trespassing, and repeated trespassing after being prohibited.
