C-U Public Health District handing out free meals to kids

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Children can receive free meals at the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District building located on Kenyon Road in Champaign.

Servings for breakfast are from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., while lunch is available from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. The C-U Public Health District pointed out that for many kids, the most nutritious or perhaps their only meals are provided at school. Their current free meal initiative aims to address this concern.

“Food security remains a pressing issue, especially now, as many individuals face uncertainties regarding their SNAP benefits and other resources,” stated Jennifer Lotton, the Community Nutrition Programs Coordinator.

“So, we really want to make sure that kids are not having any issues accessing foods who need them.”

The meals are balanced with a protein, grain and fruit or vegetable. They are available for kids up to 18 years old. No proof of residency or ID is required.

The free meals will be available Monday through Friday until Aug. 11.
