Officer shoots brick-wielding man outside California elementary school

A police officer fatally shot a man right in front of an elementary school in Anaheim on Monday, which led to a temporary lockdown of the school while students remained in their classrooms.

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the entrance of John Marshall Elementary School at Falmouth Avenue and Holly Street.

Sgt. Matt Sutter from the Anaheim Police Department informed KTLA that they first got a report about a “suspicious individual” allegedly carrying a brick, followed by a shovel.

Sutter stated, “We are uncertain about the individual’s intentions with the brick, but upon the officer’s arrival, there was an interaction that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.”

The officer immediately began rendering first aid to the man, who was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was not hurt, and the name of the suspect hasn’t been released.

Marshall Elementary School was placed on a temporary lockdown, which was lifted after police secured the scene.
