Vehicle suffers 'mechanical failure,' crashes into Champaign detention pond

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A vehicle crashed into a detention pond in Champaign Wednesday evening after suffering a mechanical failure.

The Champaign Police Department reported to WCIA that officers were dispatched at about 7:34 p.m. to the 3000 block of North Prospect Avenue following reports of a car in a detention pond.

Upon reaching the scene, officers spoke with the driver and discovered that a “mechanical failure” had caused the vehicle to veer off the road.

Due to the vehicle being submerged, the Dive Team from the Cornbelt Fire Protection District was called in to help tow operators retrieve the vehicle from the water.

No one was hurt, and no one was cited for the crash, Champaign Police added.

Officers stayed at the scene until just after 10 p.m. to help direct traffic and ensure safety while crews worked to recover the vehicle.
