BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — Pickleball enthusiasts from across the nation have gathered in Bristol, Tennessee, since Wednesday to compete in the prestigious Carvana PPA Pickleball Tournament.
“Last year was remarkable during our inaugural tournament. This year, we’ve seen a 40% increase in participants,” stated Bristol Sportsplex owner Matt Lavinder. “We had over 1,100 players this time compared to 800 last year. It was undoubtedly a success.”
Competitors, both men and women, engaged in doubles and singles events aiming for gold, silver, or bronze medals. Lavinder noted that this venue is not just an ordinary stop on the tour.
“Participants from the West Coast and metropolitan areas are captivated by this region,” Lavinder remarked. “It’s their first visit here, and their feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Pickleball draws them in, but the unique southern hospitality and culture here create a memorable experience.”
Crowds filled the Sportsplex stands to witness exceptional players like Altaf Merchant, renowned for holding the most victories in Senior Professional Pickleball history.
“The enthusiasm and camaraderie at the first event marked it as something extraordinary,” Merchant shared with News Channel 11. “From the start, you could sense that this was a genuine and substantial tour.”
With the game only expected to grow more, both players and the Sportsplex want the tournament back in Tennessee.
“I would come back to Bristol for two reasons. It’s a PPA, and I love playing PPA. But more importantly, I can drive you in on my drive from my house to Bristol. I pass two Buc-ee’s on the way,” Merchant said.
“I’m hopeful that they’ll, they’ll be eager to come back next year,” Lavinder added.
