ORLANDO, Fla. – Sky enthusiasts, prepare yourselves! The night of Monday, Oct. 6, will usher in the first supermoon of 2025.
This particular supermoon is notable due to its timing, being the latest first occurrence of its kind within a calendar year since 2010.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon takes place when the full moon aligns with the closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee.
This event makes the moon seem approximately 30% more luminous and around 14% larger than an average full moon.
Although the variation might not be stark to the unaided eye, it’s a captivating scene and a perfect opportunity to admire the sky.
The moon will rise around sunset and will appear at its fullest around 11:45 p.m.
When are the next supermoons?
If you miss tonight’s lunar show, don’t worry as there are two more supermoons to catch before the year ends:
Each will offer another chance to see the moon shine just a bit brighter and bigger than usual.
