St. Helena Branch Library to hold events for Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Month

The St. Helena Branch Library in South Carolina has planned various events throughout October to commemorate Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Month, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and the commission responsible for it were officially recognized by Congress on October 12, 2006.

“This celebration aims to honor, uplift, and share the rich and enduring heritage of the Gullah/Geechee community, whose history, language, traditions, and culture are deeply connected to the Sea Islands and Lowcountry region,” stated a spokesperson.

Gullah/Geechee Stories & Traditions Night with Queen Quet

  • October 14 at 4 p.m.

    • Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine, Chieftess and Head-of-State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, will open the month with a signature Gullah/Geechee “histo-musical” presentation, weaving oral history, music and language.

Gullah/Geechee Paint & Sip with Dorneisha Batson

  • Oct. 25 at 11 a.m.
    • Dorneisha Batson has been one of the leading “Gullah/Geechee CREATE” artists. She will lead an adults only Gullah Geechee Paint & Sip.

Gullah/Geechee CREATE with Queen Quet, Quadré Stuckey and Zavia Jenkins

  • Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
    • Stuckey and Jenkins will join Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation in a “Gullah/Geechee CREATE” art evening to educate people about the importance of the natural Sea Island environment and how they can upcycle marine debris and create works of art.
