JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – West Walnut Street is ready for the Johnson City community.

The businesses along the block celebrated the return of people strolling around with the “Welcome to Walnut” event, which marked the end of the project and acknowledged the dedication of the involved businesses.

Owner of MOJO Skate Shop, Joey Booth, said the renovations add a new flair to the street.

“It looks stunning,” he mentioned. “The road is fantastic. Although the renovations were a bit challenging, they tackled it in three stages. They began at a distance, then moved closer to my shop, and finished with the last section, so it wasn’t overly difficult.”

Multiple businesses offered food specials, product discounts, and events throughout the evening.

The Jeremiah Cafe, a non-profit organization offering work experience for individuals with autism, extended its hours by four and featured a Maryland-style crab cake special.

Manager Gabby King said the cafe remained open during renovations.

“It was occasionally challenging, particularly when the construction was happening right in front of us,” she explained. “However, we received tremendous support from the community, and even if the street was closed, people found ways to visit us.”

“Foot traffic has been steadily growing,” noted Emma Fate, another manager at Jeremiah Cafe. “We’re optimistic that with the road completed, things will continue to improve.”

New businesses also joined in on the festivities.

Cofounder and co-owner of the Johnson City Brewing Company, Eric Latham, just opened his third location on West Walnut Street.

He said West Walnut is the new place to be.

“We always knew we wanted to set up here,” he shared. “We were eager to join the Walnut community, especially since we live on the nearby tree streets. It took approximately six months to establish, requiring more time and money than expected. But we’re thrilled to finally be open.”
