Silver Bluff Baptist Church marks 275 years of rich history

In Beech Island, SC, Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church is commemorating its 275th anniversary, celebrating its recognition as one of the earliest and longest-standing African American churches in the nation.

Established in 1750, Silver Bluff has significantly contributed to the proliferation of numerous churches within the CSRA. The rich history of the church is a source of pride for its community members, who convened to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Marvin Morgan, the pastor of Silver Bluff, expressed his astonishment and honor at being part of such a historic establishment, remarking, “Amen, it’s truly remarkable to be included in it, and as the 18th pastor of the Silver Bluff Baptist Church, it feels incredible to contribute to this history and guide God’s people to His kingdom.”

Jan Morgan, Marvin’s wife and the church’s First Lady, reflected on the anniversary by saying, “It’s beyond my imagination—such a tremendous blessing to be involved.”

Delores Richardson, a member for 60 years, stressed the significance of the church’s history, articulating, “Our history is our legacy, and it fills me with pride to be part of this legacy. We share our story with pride, honor, and dignity everywhere we go, and understanding our roots and essence fills me with pride to be part of this history.”

Linda N. McKie, a trustee and fourth-generation member, emphasized the familial connections within the church, stating, “My ancestors were part of this; I am the fourth generation at Silver Bluff. I treasure passing this legacy on to my children and grandchildren, showing them that history begins here.”

Dorian Hazel, Chairman of the Deacon Board, expressed his deep connection to the church, stating, “It means the world to me, I grew up here, my parents brought me here, I just love being here.”

Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church plans to continue its legacy and keep its doors open for many more centuries, celebrating the rich history and community ties that have defined it for 275 years.
