CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Although Saturday marked Illinois football’s Homecoming Game, it was anything but a typical Homecoming Weekend. This year’s events were highlighted by Big Noon Kickoff and a performance by REO Speedwagon, which generated excitement across the campus.
“It’s amazing to witness the enthusiasm and lively atmosphere among tailgaters and the Illini community,” expressed Illinois alum Eric Ortinau. “I’ve been a fan of REO since the 1970s when I was a teen.”
The sounds of the band took over Gies Memorial Stadium at halftime, and Illini fans couldn’t fight the feeling of excitement any more.
“It’s truly classic,” remarked Illinois supporter Robert Noll. “To have Illinois graduates return and perform at such an important game is simply unparalleled.”
He said a sense of community and passing down traditions to future Illini is what Homecoming is all about.
Noll added, “I’ve been attending games since I was four, and now with a five-year-old son, I hope he cherishes these moments as I have, continuing the legacy and creating lasting memories.”
