CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Champaign Centennial track standout Cameryn Gould was named the WCIA 3 Athlete of the Week on Thursday.
Gould recently broke the Chargers’ program indoor record in long jump with a leap of 21 feet and three inches.
He tried out long jump as an eighth grader but didn’t find much success. After skipping the event as a freshman, he returned to action as a sophomore and is now hitting his stride as a junior.
“You got to be explosive,” Gould said regarding the key to success in long jump. “You can’t like run too hard because if you run too hard it’ll show in your jump.”
“He’s not even tapped into half of what he’s going to be,” Centennial head boys’ track coach Joshua Sterling said. “When we get outdoor we actually can get some more speed on him.”
Gould now hopes to chase the Chargers’ outdoor record in the event and qualify for state. Sterling says his quick development is a testament to the work of the team’s assistant coaches.
Gould is now eligible for a $1,000 scholarship WCIA will give away to one boy and one girl at the end of the school year.
