CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Community advocates held their annual “Midnight Basketball” event Friday night in Champaign.

Approximately 60 middle and high school students from the community gathered to play until midnight on July 18. This marks the ninth year of the event, concluding the week-long “Campference,” where leaders visit underserved areas to support children.

Community Advocate Willie Comer said the night offers kids a safe place to play the game and form good habits in the community.

“This event serves a dual purpose: Firstly, it provides a safe environment for kids to enjoy their love for basketball, including the fun of friendly banter,” Comer stated. “Secondly, it offers an opportunity for kids to connect with Christ and grow in their faith. Additionally, it’s a place for them to form lasting relationships with us.”

Although the event was their annual celebration, Comer hosts games at the Leonard Center every Friday throughout the year.
