Clearwater Police Safely Extract 5-Foot Boa Constrictor from Local Woman's Vehicle

In an unusual twist of events in Clearwater, Florida, the local police department was called to handle an unexpected intruder last week. A resident’s vehicle became the temporary perch for an uninvited, slithering guest—a boa constrictor measuring over five feet in length.

This scaly visitor was discovered lounging on the hood of a car parked on Franklin Street. The startled owner, understandably concerned by the sight, decided to seek assistance from the police.

Responding to the call for help were Sgt. Hinkebein and Officer Roy, who quickly assessed the situation. Upon arrival, the officers suspected that the snake was likely an abandoned pet. “He’s a pet, but those ones can be real testy,” Sgt. Hinkebein remarked, as caught on their body camera footage.

While the police are no strangers to peculiar situations, this encounter with a large constrictor was certainly out of the ordinary for the Clearwater officers. It serves as a reminder of the need for responsible pet ownership, especially when it involves exotic animals that can become a challenge for their owners.

“He’s a pet, but those ones can be real testy,” the sergeant could be heard saying on body camera video.

Sgt. Hinkebein came prepared. She took out a snake hook and used it to wrangle the reptile. The police department noted that the sergeant carries a snake hook in her patrol car for whatever situation might arise.

Officer Roy helped Sgt. Hinkebein scoop the snake into a box and they took the boa to a local pet store, where officials said it will be able to find a “proper home.”

In a social media post, the police department said Sgt. Hinkebein and Officer Roy handled the situation “like pros,” and added that this was “just another day in Florida.”
