WATERFORD, Conn. (WFLA) — Beachgoers in Connecticut are facing a problem. A scrappy, feathered, thieving problem who goes by the name Cecil.

According to a report from NBC affiliate WVIT, there’s a notorious gull named Cecil, known for snatching food straight from people’s hands. Beware, because Cecil is always on the lookout with a ravenous hunger comparable to that of a famished person.

Waterford Beach Park has even put up signs about him, warning people to be cautious of the flying fiend.

Cecil is mostly interested in grabbing their snacks, but his escapades sometimes result in minor injuries. His sharp beak has caused several individuals to suffer bites and scratches, though fortunately, the lifeguards are well-prepared with plenty of bandages on hand.

This bird appears to be an American herring gull, commonly seen on the East Coast beaches. These gulls are large, noisy, and famously aggressive scavengers, ready to take food from other birds—or in this case, unsuspecting humans.

While Cecil has become a bit of a problem and has generated numerous complaints to the parks and recreation department this summer, the Town of Waterford finds itself limited in possible actions against him.

“Understandably, it’s a wild animal and isn’t truly harmful,” stated Tim Cieplik, Waterford Recreation and Parks Program Coordinator, to WVIT. “Our best option is just to share in the amusement he brings.”
