Fire departments, farmers put out corn field fire in Coles Co.

COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Two local fire departments responded to a corn field fire Wednesday morning in Coles County.

At roughly 11:08 a.m., the Humboldt Fire Protection District received a call to respond to a fire in a corn field at the intersection of County Roads 700 East and 1300 North in Mattoon. The blaze broke out during the harvesting process. Assistance was provided by the Cooks Mills Fire Protection District.

Farmers on the scene utilized tractors and disks to help contain the fire, successfully preventing it from spreading further. According to Humboldt Fire officials, crews had cleared the area by about noon.

The scene was attended by two fire trucks from Humboldt Fire and three from Cooks Mills. The reason for the fire remains undetermined, and no additional details are available at this moment.

WCIA reached out to the Cooks Mills Fire Protection District for more information but did not receive an immediate response.
