Cumberland's McElravy, Harmon take strong connection into senior year

CUMBERLAND, Ill. (WCIA) — The Cumberland Pirates achieved a significant milestone in 2024, securing their fifth playoff victory in the program’s history with a 28-6 win against Tuscola.

19 seniors are back for the Pirates after going 8-3 last season.

Tight end Zack Harmon and quarterback Hudson McElravy have nearly a decade of experience together on the field.

Harmon gives his QB a huge target to throw to. The 6’8″ 240lb Harmon is 40lbs heavier than last season.

This dynamic duo hopes their connection helps the Pirates get back to the postseason.

“We’ve been on the field together since the fourth grade, making it nine years now, and our bond has only strengthened,” Harmon explained. “Seeing one another in the hallways, we constantly communicate and can almost instinctively predict our plays. If adjustments are necessary, a simple glance is enough to make them happen.”

“It’s remarkable because there are so many places I can throw the ball where no one else can reach it, yet he consistently makes the catch,” McElravy noted. “What astounds me the most are his hands, which have significantly improved. He’s also one of the team’s top blockers, even contributing effectively to the run game. This skill set makes him a dual threat, as defenses have to anticipate the run, and next thing they know, he’s ten yards downfield on a corner route.”

Cumberland opens the season at Villa Grove on August 29 at 7:00 p.m.
