DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Robert “Bob” Iverson, an alderman on the Danville City Council, has died, at the age of 74 years old.

An obituary published by Sunset Funeral Home said Iverson died on Thursday in Peoria.

Born in Chicago and brought up in Glenview, Iverson attended Southern Illinois University. It was there he met his wife Judith before they decided to settle in Danville. His career spanned both the news and public relations sectors, serving as a reporter for WITY radio, a spokesperson for Danville School District 118, and as the Communications Coordinator for the Danville medical center and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois.

“Bob always viewed his job as a way to assist others, whether through delivering news, engaging the public in community relations, or finding ways to reduce pollution,” the Iverson family shared. “He approached his work with seriousness, yet never took himself too seriously. Bob was quick with a joke or humorous comment in any given situation. He cherished staying active in the community and loved playing Euchre with his friends.”

Beyond his work in journalism and public relations, Iverson served twice as a Danville alderman—in 1987 and again in 2019—and had also held the position of Vice Mayor.

Iverson was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for 30 years. He served as a church elder and on numerous committees and groups. He helped the church win the Illinois Sustainability Award, and also has been active in past years in the Kiwanis, Alzheimer’s Alliance, Palmer Arena Board, and other local organizations.

He was an avid Chicago baseball fan, loved photography and was a cigar aficionado, his family added.

Iverson is survived by his wife, two daughters, a grandson and his three siblings. A visitation is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville, followed by a celebration of life at 10 a.m. on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church.

Memorials in his memory may be made to the church.
