Danville Greenlights $515K Tech Investment with DACC-Police Partnership to Enhance Community Safety

On Tuesday evening, the Danville City Council reached a unanimous decision to approve two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the operations of the local police department.

One of the key agreements marks the beginning of a collaborative effort between the Danville Area Community College (DACC) and the police department. This partnership is designed to foster educational and career opportunities for students while also strengthening community ties.

Under this agreement, the police department will actively engage in events hosted by the college and provide guidance to students exploring careers in law enforcement. In exchange, students will have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience by shadowing officers during their duties and utilizing the department’s training facilities. This mutually beneficial arrangement is set to last for three years, offering ample time for both parties to reap its rewards.

Additionally, the city council sanctioned a substantial investment in technology for the department, approving a $515,500 expenditure on body-worn cameras, squad video cameras, and other related equipment. This acquisition is part of a five-year plan designed to enhance transparency and accountability within the force. The initial year will see the city spend $65,000, with costs rising to almost $190,000 in the second fiscal year, before stabilizing at around $65,000 annually thereafter.

The city council also approved a $515,500 purchase for body worn cameras, squad video cameras and more. The five-year plan will cost the city $65,000 the first year. In the second fiscal year, it’ll cost almost $190,000 and then each year after that it’ll cost the city about $65,000.

The city will receive 71 body worn cameras, 28 squad video cameras, Docking Stations, and unlimited cloud storage from Motorola Solutions.
