WASHINGTON – While President Donald Trump’s name might adorn the facade, Congress continues to recognize the Kennedy Center by its original designation.

On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed a bipartisan budget proposal, which allocates $32 million to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for operational costs until September 30, 2027.

Following his inauguration in 2025, Trump initiated several leadership modifications at the center, culminating in the Republican president’s chosen board of trustees deciding in December to rename the venue as the Trump Kennedy Center. This involved adding his name alongside Kennedy’s on the building’s exterior and its website.

The Kennedy Center acknowledged the decision as a nod to Trump’s efforts in revitalizing an institution he had previously criticized for its perceived liberal bias. However, under his leadership, many artists withdrew from scheduled performances, resulting in a decline in both ticket sales and attendance. The viewership for the Kennedy Center Honors program, which Trump hosted, saw a 35% drop compared to the 2024 broadcast, contrary to his expectations of increased ratings.

Following President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Congress established the center as a living memorial to the late Democrat in 1964. The legislation specifically forbids the board of trustees from transforming the center into a memorial for others or placing another individual’s name on its exterior. This decision by the board is currently under legal scrutiny in federal court.
