DEWITT COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Those in emergency situations in DeWitt County are now able to text 911 for first responder help.

On Wednesday morning, DeWitt County CenCom announced via Facebook that residents can now text for help in situations where speaking isn’t possible. CenCom’s 911 professionals are now prepared to respond to text messages during emergencies.

Karen Clevenger, the 911 Systems Manager for DeWitt County, shared that the texting program has been registered with the FCC. This development follows successful test trials with cell providers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, which wrapped up on Tuesday just before the announcement on Facebook, according to Clevenger.

While the option to text 911 is available, Clevenger emphasized that calling 911 is still preferable if possible. Speaking on the phone is more efficient for operators because it allows them to talk and type to collect information at the same time. Nonetheless, texting 911 is particularly beneficial for individuals who are hearing impaired, those in noisy environments, or in circumstances where speaking on the phone might be risky.

“Call if you can, text if you can’t,” Clevenger added.

Additionally, Clevenger pointed out that even with texting, 911 operators can determine the caller’s location; however, it may take a bit longer to access and confirm information and gather further details.
