District 5 Tampa council candidates back on campaign trail ahead of runoff

In Tampa, Florida, two candidates are vying for the city council seat left vacant after the passing of Councilwoman Gwendolyn Henderson.

Thomas Scott, who is a pastor of a church, hopes to return to a post he once held.

“This is short term. It’s only about 16 months. You need someone who has the experience to represent District 5,” Scott said.

The church leader served as a commissioner in Hillsborough County and a councilman in Tampa.

Scott’s rival, Naya Young, is a newcomer to politics at 33 and works for a nonprofit assisting students in District 5. Young expressed her eagerness to embrace more responsibilities and introduced herself to the voters.

“Naya Young is community driven. She’s people driven. I’ve worked in grassroots nonprofit for the past seven years,” Young said.

The district involves 45,000 voters in Downtown Tampa, Channelside, Ybor City, East Tampa, and a portion of West Tampa.

Young mentioned some of the problems facing taxpayers that she said she is ready to help solve, if she’s elected.

“Housing remains a major concern, focusing on affordability and providing various housing options for families of different sizes and income brackets. Transportation is another significant matter,” Young stated. “We also need opportunities for our youth and initiatives for their empowerment.”

Scott said he understands the specific needs for a district

“There are infrastructure challenges, especially in East Tampa, where overgrown retention ponds require attention. There is a need for youth engagement activities and recreational parks. Channelside lacks green spaces, and economic development is vital for West Tampa, Tampa Heights, and Seminole Heights,” Scott explained.

The runoff is set for October 28.
