ORLANDO, Fla. – Lauren M. asked, “Someone told me it’s a mandatory court appearance if you pass a school bus. Is that true?”
The short answer? Almost! But let’s be honest — regardless of the legal consequences, there’s never a good reason to pass a school bus when it’s stopped with its lights flashing.
I see it all the time — frustrated drivers treating school buses like an inconvenience. But out of all the traffic situations where patience matters, this is the one where you need to check your ego the most. Kids are getting on and off that bus, and one reckless move could lead to tragic consequences.
Believe it or not, Florida law had to spell out specific penalties for drivers who pass a school bus on the side where children are loading and unloading.
Let’s be clear: Passing a stopped school bus illegally always comes with a fine.
But if you pass on the side where children enter and exit, you’re looking at a mandatory court appearance and a very steep fine.
While this situation isn’t super common, just imagine how reckless it is. There’s zero justification for putting young lives in danger.
Bottom line? Just don’t do it.
Whether it’s a mandatory court appearance, passing a stopped school bus is one of the most dangerous (and selfish) driving decisions you can make. Slow down, be patient, and follow the law. Those extra few minutes aren’t worth a ticket — or worse, a tragedy.
