SHELBY COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A person was airlifted to a regional hospital following a rollover crash Saturday morning on I-57 in Shelby County.
At around 8:10 a.m., responders from Illinois State Police Troop 7 and Neoga Fire and EMS attended to a lone vehicle rollover on the southbound side of I-57 at mile marker 168.5. On route, the Neoga Fire and EMS received information that the driver had left the car and was lying on the ground.
According to State Police, for unknown reasons, a Nissan Kicks went off the roadway and overturned several times.
Given the crash’s severity and the injuries the driver sustained, aerial medical assistance was summoned. Neoga Fire and EMS teams set up a secure zone for evaluating the driver’s condition and readying them for helicopter transport.
The fire teams temporarily shut down the highway’s travel lanes to ensure the safe landing of the helicopter. Once the driver was transferred to the care of Air Evac Lifeteam 145 from Mattoon, the interstate was reopened. Emergency crews departed, and the driver was flown to a nearby hospital.
Neoga Fire and EMS units returned to their stations by approximately 9:46 a.m.
