CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Due to ongoing dry conditions in Central Illinois, fire departments and emergency management agencies are implementing burn bans and advising against open burning.
The Coles County Emergency Management Agency has enforced a county-wide burn ban effective from midnight on Friday. This prohibition covers all open burning, including landscape waste, agricultural waste, household trash, and garbage. The use of consumer fireworks is also prohibited. Those found violating the ban may incur a $100 fine.
The Coles County EMA said small campfires that are monitored in contained fire pits are allowed. The burn ban is in effect until further notice.
In DeWitt County, the Clinton Fire Department has also initiated a burn ban. This ban, effective from Sunday, will remain until “further notice” due to the dry conditions, wind, and high temperatures.
“Please refrain from burning. If you see anyone with an open fire, please contact 911. Even a small fire can escalate rapidly within minutes,” stated the fire department in a Facebook post.
In Champaign County, although there is no burn ban, the Champaign County Fire Chief’s Association is advising residents against burning anything. The association indicated that current weather conditions and the persistent drought are heightening fire hazard risks.
“The safety of our communities and residents is our highest priority, and we ask for your
cooperation in reducing fire risks during this critical period,” the association said in a statement.
