BISMARCK (KXNET) — Students at Elk Ridge Elementary are proving that leadership starts early. Members of the school’s Trailblazers club collected and donated essential items to support United Way’s homeless shelter.
The Trailblazers club, made up of 69 fourth and fifth graders, raised over $500 through a hot cocoa fundraiser. With the help of additional donations, they had a total of $1,000 to spend on supplies. Working in small groups, the students headed to Target with shopping lists and a $55 budget per group.
“We sold hot chocolate to students and teachers,” said fifth grader Gabrielle Palczewski.
They picked up items like towels, shampoo, toothpaste, and body wash — all requested by the shelter. In total, they bought hundreds of products during their trip.
In addition to their shopping, the students also collected 800 donated items from their families and others at the school. Everything was packed up and delivered to the United Way of Utah County’s homeless shelter. While there, the students learned more about how the shelter supports people in need.
“It feels good to help the community,” said fifth grader Harper Bergquist.
“We are all so lucky to have what we have,” said student Claire Presser. “And some people aren’t so lucky.”
Trailblazers is a club at Elk Ridge. Students are selected by teacher recommendation and take part in school and community projects that build leadership and teamwork skills.
“The kids took full responsibility — they made the cocoa, handled the money, and stayed within their budget while shopping,” said teacher Michelle Buckholtz.
This project gave students the chance to serve their community and see the impact of their work firsthand. It also showed what’s possible when young people take the lead.
