ORLANDO, Fla. – A pioneering mentorship initiative is being launched by a renowned historically Black fraternity, aiming to bridge the gap between young students and seasoned professionals through dynamic networking encounters.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity recently organized its inaugural “speed mentoring” event in Orlando. This gathering brought together 20 young men with influential business and community figures from Central Florida.

“There’s often a misunderstanding that young men of color face an achievement gap when, in reality, it’s an opportunity gap,” explained Derek Walls. “Introducing them to professionals not only sets a high standard for these young men to aspire to but also provides them with valuable connections.”

During the event, students engaged in rapid three-minute discussions with professionals from diverse sectors such as law, education, journalism, and entrepreneurship.

The experience was particularly rewarding for Khalil Dexter, a budding chemical engineer.

“It was an amazing opportunity. I met a diverse group of people and established numerous connections with individuals eager to offer their support,” he remarked.

The speed mentoring initiative is part of the fraternity’s broader “Kappa League” mentoring program, which focuses on developing leadership skills through personal development and college and career preparation.

This event marks a new chapter in the organization’s commitment to scholarship and service, providing direct access to professional mentors who can help guide young men toward their career aspirations.
