JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The anticipation is reaching its peak in Johnson City as ETSU football prepares to launch its season this Saturday at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium. The Buccaneers are ready to leave a mark in their inaugural game against Murray State.

This fall brings a new era for the Bucs, with over 50 new players joining the squad. This infusion of fresh talent has intensified competition across the team, especially in the crucial quarterback position between Cade McNamara and Jacolby Criswell.

“I’m confident in both of them. I genuinely believe we have two starting quarterbacks,” head coach Will Healy stated. “My aim is for us to exemplify how to effectively utilize two quarterbacks. However, it’s up to them to perform well and ensure they’re prepared when called upon, as I plan to give both ample playing time on Saturday.”

As kickoff approaches, ETSU veterans are helping the new faces settle in and prepare for the traditions that come with Buccaneer football.

“The Buc Walk might not seem like a huge crowd, but it really is a significant gathering,” wide receiver Karim Page expressed. “Coach Healy encouraged us to engage with the fans and interact with the kids. It’s truly exciting.”

Players say they’ve bought into Healy’s leadership as the team prepares for a historic opener.

“ETSU was among the first to offer me an opportunity,” linebacker Brenden LeBlanc remarked. “I appreciated Coach Healy’s vision and beliefs, which ultimately brought me back here with absolute certainty.”

With a plethora of new recruits, Saturday’s clash against the Racers will provide the first genuine glimpse into this new phase of Buccaneer football. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson City.
