ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — Experts from East Tennessee State University (ETSU) indicate that the recent combination of sunny days and cool nights is fostering excellent conditions for stunning autumn foliage.
ETSU issues weekly updates on the progression of fall colors throughout the season, blending scientific insights with local expertise to assist both residents and visitors in experiencing the beauty of the Appalachian autumn.
Tom Niziol, a member of the Roan Mountain Citizens Club, said Roan Mountain has a variety of tree species.
“This year, just like in previous years, we’re witnessing an array of colors,” he mentioned. “The Appalachians are fascinating for many reasons, one being the diversity. There are over 150 tree species found here—more than anywhere in Europe. This makes it a special place to observe such a range of colors. Currently, many yellow hues are visible, and some maples are beginning to develop their characteristic red tones. So, yet again, it’s the perfect opportunity to visit.”
Niziol said the top of Carver’s Gap offers one of the best regional views anytime of the year, but especially in the fall.
