ONLY ON WSAV: Whale beached on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. () – A whale beached itself Saturday evening on Hilton Head near the Ocean Oaks Resort on South Forest Beach.

Authorities, in collaboration with SCDNR, have been present at the site since last night. Federal NOAA staff have responded to the stranded whale. Currently, NOAA is overseeing the response effort.

The Town of Hilton Head released a statement via its Facebook. The message reads:

A beached sperm whale has been spotted on Hilton Head Island.

The whale remains alive, and experts, including NOAA and marine mammal specialists, are on-site doing their utmost to ensure its comfort.

Whales often beach themselves due to severe illness or injury. In this situation, euthanasia has been deemed the most humane solution. However, the specific type and dosage of euthanasia medication needed is not readily accessible and is currently being transported from Florida. An experienced veterinarian from the Georgia Aquarium is also on the way to conduct the procedure.

We understand how difficult this is to witness, and we appreciate the community’s compassion and patience. Please continue to respect the perimeter and give responders the space they need.

We will continue to share updates as we receive them.

This is an ongoing story. Stay with for all updates as they are made available
